Phonological Awareness is a vital set of skills that children need to be skilled readers. It deals exclusively with sounds, specifically counting words in sentences, syllables, rhyming, and phonemic awareness (individual sounds in words). A child who is phonologically aware can skillfully hear and manipulate sounds in words. Phonological awareness is a major building block for skilled reading. Children who are not yet able to sound out and read words may struggle with phonological awareness even more so than phonics. This assessment will help determine the phonological awareness skills a child may still need to practice.
No extra materials are needed to complete this assessment with your child. Printing the assessment is helpful for recording purposes.
